Phuket or Krabi

At a glance

Choose Phuket for more beaches, Old Town, nightlife and flights, and Krabi for limestone cliffs, islands and a slower pace; the weather is almost the same, and you can do both.

  • Weather: One monsoon and one dry season: both are driest in February, and the Tourism Authority of Thailand recommends November to April for both.
  • Crowds: In 2025, Phuket had 2.2 times Krabi's visitors and 3.3 times its rooms.
  • Spending: Foreign visitors staying overnight spent 14% less a day in Krabi in 2025, the gap mostly in getting around and rooms.
  • Phi Phi: It's part of Krabi, and a little nearer Krabi's piers than Phuket's.
  • Between them: About 153 km by road from airport to airport, through Phang Nga.

Is Krabi better than Phuket?

It depends on the trip you want. Phuket, an island, is the busier place: beaches up and down its west coast, Old Town's shophouses and food, Patong's nightlife, and many more flights. Krabi, on the mainland coast to the east, is limestone: cliffs over the sea at Railay, islands off Ao Nang, and a slower pace.

  • Choose Phuket for a choice of beaches and places to stay, Old Town to explore, nights out, and day trips into Phang Nga Bay.
  • Choose Krabi for cliffs and islands: Railay, reached only by boat; the islands off Ao Nang; climbing; and Ko Lanta, Krabi's island district to the south, which the Tourism Authority of Thailand calls a calm and relaxing island.
  • Do both if you have a week or more.

Phuket and Krabi weather, month by month

Phuket and Krabi share one sea and one monsoon. Daytime highs at their weather stations are within 0.7 °C of each other in every month. Phuket's station is driest in February and wettest in September; Krabi's is driest in February and wettest in October. May to October brings 76% of Phuket station's rain and 69% of Krabi station's.

Krabi's station is inland, near the airport, and its nights are about 3 °C cooler than at Phuket's station. By the sea it's different: at Ko Lanta, Krabi's island station, the nights average 23.9 to 25.4 °C, and December to March brings 189 mm of rain, less than at either (237 mm at Phuket's station, 331 mm at Krabi's). So read the table's differences as the stations', not the provinces'.

When to avoid Krabi, and Phuket

  • From May to October, in the south-west monsoon, boat trips on both sides can be called off at short notice, and a red flag means no swimming; in September 2024, Krabi suspended its Phi Phi ferries for a storm.
  • Phi Phi's Maya Bay closes from 1 August to 30 September.
  • Krabi's Hong islands, in Than Bok Khorani National Park, have no seasonal closure in the parks' 2026 notice; trips still stop in rough weather.
  • The busiest time: the Tourism Authority of Thailand advises booking Krabi early for late December to early January.

Which is cheaper, Krabi or Phuket?

Official figures measure what visitors spend, not what things cost. In 2025, a foreign visitor staying overnight spent 14% less a day in Krabi than in Phuket. Most of the gap was getting around, 43% less, and rooms, 19% less. Thai visitors staying overnight spent about the same in both, so the gap may say more about the kind of stay than about prices.

Crowds: how busy each is

  • Visitors in 2025: Phuket 14.2 million, Krabi 6.3 million.
  • Foreign visitors: Phuket 10.7 million, Krabi 3.6 million.
  • Rooms to stay in: Phuket 3.3 times as many as Krabi.
  • The average stay of visitors who stayed the night: 4.88 days in Phuket, 3.35 days in Krabi.
  • Day visitors: 1.9 million of Krabi's visitors came for the day, and 1.2 million of Phuket's.
  • Airport passengers in 2024: Phuket 17.2 million, Krabi 2.6 million.

Is it better to go to Phi Phi from Phuket or Krabi?

Go from wherever you're staying. Phi Phi is part of Krabi province, and in a straight line it's a little nearer Krabi's piers, 34 to 37 km, than Phuket's, 42 to 47 km. The Tourism Authority of Thailand lists daily ferries from Khlong Chilat pier, near Krabi Town, and Noppharat Thara pier, by Ao Nang. From Phuket, boats leave from piers on the island's east side, Chalong's long pier among them, so you cross the island first.

Either way it's a full day, and nobody may swim in Maya Bay: the fine is up to 100,000 baht.

What Krabi has that Phuket doesn't

Railay: beaches under limestone cliffs, on the mainland but reached only by boat, and one of Thailand's great places to climb. Ao Nang, Krabi's beach town, is where boats leave for Railay and the islands, and a sunset spot.

The islands off Ao Nang: at low tide a sandbar joins Ko Kai, Ko Mo and Ko Thap. They're in a national park, with a fee to land. The Hong islands are in a national park of their own, Than Bok Khorani.

Tiger Cave Temple: about 1,260 steep steps to a view all round. It's hard going in the heat, and two climbers died there in March 2026: go early, take water, dress for a temple, and turn back if you feel unwell.

The Emerald Pool, in a wildlife sanctuary, is a warm pool you may swim in; the Blue Pool beyond it is for looking only.

Krabi Town is a river town, with evening food stalls, a weekend walking street, and longtail trips to the twin limestone peaks of Khao Khanap Nam.

Nights out: Patong is Phuket's most visited beach, and since December 2023 licensed venues in its Bangla Road zones may stay open until 04:00. Krabi has bars, but no late-night zone.

Getting from Phuket to Krabi

  • By road it's about 153 km from airport to airport, and 185 km from Patong to Ao Nang: off the island on Highway 402 and through Phang Nga province.
  • By air: both have international airports, and Krabi's international flights include direct ones from the Middle East and, in winter, from Europe. Phuket's handled 6.6 times as many passengers in 2024.
  • By boat: no official timetable is published for boats between Phuket and Krabi, so check the current one when you book. For ferries to Krabi's islands, the Tourism Authority of Thailand suggests one-way tickets, so your plans stay flexible.

Phuket and Krabi in one trip

  • Fly into one and out of the other, and split your stay rather than going to Krabi for the day: its sights are spread out, and a day trip spends hours on the road.
  • Leave a spare day for the boats, which the weather can call off.
