Halal food in Phuket
Updated

At a glance
Muslim cooking is easy to find in Phuket, where about a quarter of the province's people are Muslim (95,322 in its own count), but certified kitchens are fewer, so look for the halal logo and its code.
- How to tell: The logo is the Arabic word حلال in a diamond, with a code beside it that starts CICOT.HL. A “no pork” sign isn't the same thing.
- Where: In Phuket Town around Yameay Mosque, in Patong around its mosque, and in Kamala, home to one of the island's Muslim communities.
- What to try: Roti with curry, matsaman curry, and khao mok gai, the Thai chicken biryani.
- Chains: On 27 October 2026, no McDonald's or KFC branch was on the council's register of certified kitchens, so look for the logo in the branch itself.
Why Muslim cooking is easy to find here
Phuket has its own Muslim community: 95,322 people, about a quarter of the province, in its plan for 2017–2021. The Islamic Committee of Phuket lists 59 mosques, 36 of them in Thalang, the island's north.
Phuket's food grew out of Chinese, Muslim, Indian and Western cooking over about 700 years, the province says. So Muslim cooking here is local food, not something made for visitors.
How to tell it's halal
Thailand's halal logo comes from the Central Islamic Council of Thailand. It's the Arabic word حلال inside a diamond, with stripes behind it and the council's name underneath. Beside it is a code that starts CICOT.HL (กอท.ฮล. in Thai). Since 24 September 2026, new codes start สกอท.ฮล. instead, and older packs can carry the old code until about September 2028, so you'll see both.
Only food the council has certified may carry the logo. Still, a logo on a sign or a menu is a claim, so check its code.
“No pork” isn't the same as halal. The Michelin Guide's feature on halal dining in Thailand lists more: meat slaughtered by Islamic rules, a kitchen kept free of things such as blood and alcohol, and a Muslim cook.
- To check a certificate, search the council's own register, Halal Thai, at halalthai.or.th or in its app, by name or by number. Look at the date it's valid until: Thai years run 543 ahead, so 2570 is 2027. Expired certificates stay on the list.
- If a place isn't on the list, ask to see its certificate.
- To find places near you, the Halal Route app from Chulalongkorn University's Halal Science Center, launched in 2024, lists more than 1,100 restaurants across Thailand, with mosques and prayer times, in English, Thai and Arabic.
- Where there's no logo, ask how the food is made.
Southern and Thai Muslim dishes to try
Roti: flatbread from a hot pan, savoury with a beef or chicken curry, or sweet with banana and egg or condensed milk.

Matsaman (massaman) curry: its name comes from an old word for Muslim, the Michelin Guide says. It's usually beef or chicken. Pork versions are rare, but they exist.

Khao mok gai: rice cooked yellow with chicken, the Thai biryani.

Khao yam: the south's rice salad of herbs, flowers, sour mango and pomelo, often with dried fish and dried shrimp, dressed with nam budu, pickled fish and salt.
Some of Phuket's own dishes come from its Chinese side, and many of those use pork. The province lists pork in mee hokkien noodles, mee hun pa chang soup, loba and popiah. Moo hong is pork belly stewed with Chinese spices. Khanom jeen, the rice-noodle breakfast, often comes with grilled pork. Kari mai fan, Phuket's curry noodles, has chicken blood in it. Satay in this part of Thailand can be pork too. Ask before you order.
Phuket is an island of seafood, and the schools of Islamic law differ on it. The Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali schools allow crab and prawns. In the Hanafi school only fish is allowed, and scholars differ on prawns. Follow the view you hold.
Is Phuket Town halal?
Not as a whole: many of the town's own dishes use pork. But the streets around Yameay Mosque, the green-domed mosque on Taling Chan Road near Surin Circle, have many Muslim-owned businesses, including halal restaurants.
The Michelin Guide lists these roti shops in Phuket Town, each with a Bib Gourmand. Neither is on the council's register, so this is how the Michelin Guide describes them:
- Roti Thaew Nam, on Thep Krasattri Road: “a halal breakfast spot”, making roti in one big charcoal pan, with beef or chicken curry. Mornings only, 07:00–12:00.
- Roti Chaofa, on Chaofa Road: a “Thai-Muslim shop” with roti, curries, a beef matsaman and chicken biryani. Open 06:30–13:30, closed on Mondays.
At the night markets, ask at each stall.
For the rest of the town, its streets and what's on: Phuket Old Town
Patong, Kamala and the north
- Patong: halal food guides say halal and Middle Eastern restaurants have gathered around the Nurul Islam mosque on Phrabaramee Road, south of Bangla Road.
- Kamala: a quieter beach, home to one of the island's Muslim communities, the Tourism Authority of Thailand says.
- Thalang, the island's north, has 36 of the 59 mosques. Ask at your hotel where to eat nearby.
Is McDonald's halal in Phuket? And 7-Eleven?
On 27 October 2026, no McDonald's or KFC branch was on the council's register of certified kitchens. Factories in Thailand do make certified food for both chains, some of it for Malaysia and Singapore, but that doesn't make a branch here halal. Look for the logo and its code in the branch.
The register lists 7-Eleven's own-brand items, not its shops: 7 Select water and some EZYGO burgers and sandwiches carry the logo. Read each pack, because certificates expire.
Breakfast at your hotel
The council certifies hotel kitchens, and a hotel's certificate often covers one of its restaurants, not every kitchen in it. Ask which restaurant is certified, and ask to see the certificate. If you're staying in a villa with a cook, say what you need before they shop.
